Positional Talipes and Metatarsus Adductus

Why does my child have a funny shaped foot?

Positional Talipes and Metatarsus Adductus are conditions that can occur from birth. They cause the foot to change position. Either one or both feet can be affected and this condition is usually picked up at birth.

In most cases the foot is flexible and can be moved back into position with minimal pressure. If this is the case one of our Podiatrists can recommend a stretching exercise program for you and your child to help assist the foot to returns to it’s normal position.

In some cases the foot can be stiff and unable to be moved back into it’s correct position. If this is the case then our Podiatrists can assess your child and recommend a treatment plan. Depending on their age this may involve a referral for serial casting.

It is important that in conditions like these the hips be thoroughly checked, our Podiatrists are able to assess the hips, legs and feet to ensure that nothing is over looked.
